Louise MacGregor's New Adult novel, Right Guy, Wrong Time: A #MeToo Love Story is now available for pre-sale. Receive 20% off the list price if you order before the official February 23, 2021 launch date.

When the perfect guy turns up at the worst possible time, Edie has to figure out what romance and sex mean to her in the aftermath of rape. This offbeat feminist romance moves beyond “girl meets guy,” dealing empathetically with sexual dysfunction, the ubiquity of rape culture, and what recovery can look like in the #MeToo era. Although it tackles a difficult subject, Right Guy, Wrong Time does so in a way that empowers the reader. The protagonist of this New Adult novel is a relatable character who in many ways provides a good role model for others.

"...skillfully portrays the reality of assault from a woman’s perspective. [S]ome readers...may find solace in seeing this topic addressed in a romance novel."-- Library Journal

"...the best portrayal of the aftermath of a rape that I have ever read in a novel."
--Steff Pasciuti, Reader Fox Blog

Frayed Edge Press author Daniel Hales recently participated in a virtual poetry reading organized by the Warwick Free Public Library, in Warwick, MA.

Daniel read from his recent book of poems, ¿Cómo Hacer Preguntas? or How To Make Questions: 69 Instructional Poems in English and answered audience questions over Zoom.

A profile of Daniel and the virtual reading appeared in the Greenfield Recorder -- "Local author explores 'the spaces from which questions arise' with latest poetry book," written by Zack DeLuca. Daniel reflected on his writing process, the interplay of his music and his poetry, and how he recognizes when something's about to become a poem or song.

"The poems take readers on a journey and interrogate everything from the mundane through poems like 'How To Pass The Time,' to thoughts of fading love in 'How to Change Your Mind.'”

We're pleased to announce a new poetry volume, coming in 2021! The Ghettobirds by Bryant O'Hara is a collection of speculative poetry that celebrates the ability of humanity to adapt to, surpass, and possibly transcend its environment and its origins.

Author Bryant O’Hara draws on Afrofuturist traditions and a love of both the natural and the artificial world. He uses rhythm and cadence to compress thought into images of just how strange our experiences can become as we learn to shape—and be shaped by—both worlds.

If the ongoing pandemic has you feeling isolated, anxious, and disconnected, Ambushing the Void, while not comforting, assures you that you are not alone."

We're pleased to present the cover reveal for James McAdams' short story collection from Frayed Edge Press, Ambushing the Void.

"Ambushing the Void is, like every great book, tender and merciless in its explorations of the human arrangement. The stories here are about love and addiction, which might as well be the same thing in most cases—compulsions that make us suffer and thereby feel more alive. McAdams writes from inside those compulsions, never flinching at the ruin they engender. Even as his characters lie to themselves, he forces us to face the truth. I tore through these tales and didn’t want to look back at them, but I did. You will, too.”
Steve Almond, author of God Bless America & Other Stories

Daniel Hales' ¿Cómo Hacer Preguntas? or How To Make Questions: 69 Instructional Poems in English Reviewed in The Montague Reporter

"...if you know any of Hales' previous work--and if you don't, I'm telling you now--nothing will be ordinary here. Torches will be lit, envelopes pushed, locks picked, tickets for the guided tour procured, and you'll find yourself, at the end of the poem, someplace you didn't expect to be. Hales is smart and agile with words, and funny in ways both outright and sly."
Trish Crapo of The Montague Reporter has provided an excellent review of ¿Cómo Hacer Preguntas? or How To Make Questions: 69 Instructional Poems in English as well as an interview with the book's author, Daniel Hales. To read the full review, go to:

Albert Tucher's Pele's Domain Reviewed in Crime Fiction Lover

Picture
Like a good, fast-paced crime story? Are you someone who can appreciate the "ironic contrast between tropical paradise and dirty dealing"? Like a strong female lead? Meet Officer Jenny Freitas as she races to solve a series of murders on the Big Island of Hawaii, even as evidence is being gobbled up by the lava flow from the angry goddess Pele.

"Tucher made a good choice in setting the story in the midst of Kilauea’s eruption. It is not only an unusual adversary, akin to a hurricane or an avalanche, it adds an overlay of dread to the story – things are out of control. . . . Pele’s Domain
is a quick fun read!" -- Vicki Weisfeld in Crime Fiction Lover

Friends Journal on Jeremiah Hacker

Congratulations to Frayed Edge Press author Rebecca Pritchard for another awesome review! Jeremiah Hacker's social activism was informed by his Quaker background, despite his rejection of organized religion.

Thanks, Friends Journal, for the great review!
"In Jeremiah Hacker: Journalist, Anarchist, Abolitionist, Pritchard brings alive Hacker’s responses to the issues of the United States as they played out in Portland, Maine. She places him appropriately within the context of nineteenth‐century reformers and radicals. But also, through his observations and arguments, she reminds us of the timelessness of his appeals."

Picture
Louise MacGregor's new adult novel, Rape Jokes, is now available as an ebook! Part romantic comedy, part social commentary, part women's empowerment, this novel manages to be a light, entertaining read while also tackling some tough subjects.

Edie, a record label talent scout, experiences date rape as well as sexual harassment at work. Handling her recovery and these challenges is further complicated when she meets an intriguing new love interest.
This offbeat feminist romantic comedy moves beyond “girl meets guy,” dealing with sexual dysfunction, the ubiquity of rape culture, and what recovery looks like in a world filled with reminders of your assault.

What readers are saying about this 4.5 star Amazon-reviewed book:

"Rape Jokes is, without question, the best portrayal of the aftermath of a rape that I have ever read in a novel."–Goodreads

"
Rape Jokes was an intense but rewarding read. First off, let me forewarn that, unsurprisingly, this book can be triggering. But, as a survivor, I can also attest that I found it deeply relateable and empowering."–LibraryThing

First Three Titles in Street Smart Series Now Available

10/1/2019

Picture
We're pleased to announce the publication of the first three titles in the Street Smart Series of Short Fiction for People on the Go! This series features short fiction of “novelette” length (between 10,000 to 20,000 words – a work that is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novella).  Presented in a handy 5-by-7-inch format, these works are long enough to tell a good story, but brief enough to be read on a short train journey or long commute. They feature contemporary urban settings, well-drawn characters, and  engaging plots.

Street Smart Series #1 is Jean-Bernard Pouy's Full Fare -- a translation of his Plein Tarif, originally published in France in the 1990s. The series of short fictions made available to read in train stations in France  provided the inspiration for this series from Frayed Edge Press. Pouy is a well-known author of a popular detective series in France; this is the first English translation of his work. In Full Fare, government officials create a novel plan to prevent deaths of the homeless: house them in disused train cars on the outskirts of the city. This unintentionally creates a social and political experiment that leads to a new form of society—and causes the police and authorities to clash with the homeless train dwellers and the anarchists who’ve come to support them.

In Street Smart Series #2, Down and Out in Paris, with Cat, by R. A. Bolo, an American ex-patriot leads a life that many would envy: living and working in Paris. But all is not well for him in the beautiful “city of lights”—his French girlfriend has left him, he’s fallen off the wagon after decades of sobriety, and a homeless cat is now tugging at his heartstrings.

Street Smart Series #3 is The Accidental Anarchist by A. R. Melnik. Middle-aged English professor Caroline Wilson has a good job and a good husband in Philadelphia, but a restless need for a change of scene and a little excitement has her impulsively boarding a commuter bus to New York one morning. A turn down a New York City alley unexpectedly plunges her into a world she never could have imagined, where young anarchists are battling against human traffickers—and they need Caroline’s help.

Look for more titles in the Street Smart Series coming soon! Learn more about number one through 3, and get a special deal when you buy all three!

Q&A on Rape Jokes with Author Louise MacGregor

8/12/2019

Picture
Q: What’s that title about?
A: This is for sure the question I’ve fielded most since I announced Rape Jokes, and I totally get why. As far as most of the world is concerned, rape is something you shouldn’t be cracking wise about, and rape jokes as a whole have been on the forefront of some of the most prominent debates about sexual assault and the media in the last few years. But Rape Jokes (the book) isn’t an attempt to make light of sexual assault or the people who’ve dealt with it. Initially, Rape Jokes was just a working title, but as I went on with the story it became clear that there isn’t a more succinct name for a romantic comedy about rape, and I stuck with it. I know for some people it’s off-putting, but it wasn’t my attempt to turn rape into a laughing matter.
Honestly, the idea for this book came when I turned to my partner late one evening, barely looking up from my tea, and cracked a “Ha, wouldn’t it be funny if there was a romantic comedy called Rape Jokes?” And now, here we are. What I’m saying is every idea you’ve had at ten past one in the morning is the best decision you’ll ever make.

Q: Are there any parts of the book you’re especially proud of and if so why?
A: Honestly, I’m proud of the entire thing and could talk about how very proud I am of it for days. If I had to narrow it down (and bear in mind that I am a British person so “taking pride in my achievements” is a new one on me), I’m really pleased with the fact that this is a book I really would have wanted to read even if I hadn’t written it. It covers some issues that I haven’t seen covered in other books (not that they’re not out there, just that I haven’t come across them yet), and I hope that it makes some people dealing with similar stuff feel understood.

Maine Historical Society Hosts FEP Author Rebecca Pritchard

7/15/2019

Picture
Have you ever heard of Jeremiah Hacker? Neither has most of the modern American public, unfortunately! But fear not! Frayed Edge Press author Rebecca Pritchard is ready to educate, and to bring this important but forgotten 19th-century rabble-roused to life at an upcoming event hosted by the Maine Historical Society. Author of at Jeremiah Hacker: Journalist, Anarchist, Abolitionist from Frayed Edge Press, Pritchard will re-introduce the waiting public to Hacker on Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:00pm at the Maine Historical Society (MHS) in Portland. This event will feature a slide show and talk by Pritchard, as well as time for Q&A and discussion.

Jeremiah Hacker was an outspoken and controversial journalist based in Portland, Maine, for much of his professional life. He's perhaps best known as the publisher and lead writer for The Pleasure Boat, which has the distinction of being considered Maine's most controversial newspaper. Inspired by his Quaker background, Hacker worked to end slavery, poverty, and inequality of women through his writing. He spoke out against prisons, advocating instead for reform and education. He broke with all forms of organized religion and urged people to leave their churches and find moral direction from within. He promoted no political party, believing people would be better off without government. He was in favor of land for all. The most controversial of Hacker’s radical ideas, however—and the one that lost him the most readers—was his advocacy for peace as the country headed toward Civil War.

The Maine Historical Society has as its mission: "Preserving History, Engaging Minds, Connecting Maine." Pritchard's talk promises to do just that. Many of the historical photographs in the book were reproduced with permission of the MHS and came from their collections.
